Problem

A complex insurance flow that needed to feel simpler

Client wanted to harmonize its product offering, simplify the online vehicle insurance process, and refresh the UI while keeping the brand recognizable and trustworthy.

The existing experience needed to better support users who were not insurance experts. The online insurance had to explain the process clearly, guide users through the right steps, and make the offer easier to understand without overwhelming them with insurance terminology or unnecessary complexity.

Balance between complexity and everyday usability

Car insurance includes many decisions, required data points, and product conditions. For users, this can easily become confusing, especially when they do not know insurance terminology or are not sure why certain information is needed.

By mapping the flow, we could better understand where users needed more guidance, where the process could be simplified, and where the interface had to provide clearer feedback.

One of the main challenges was designing a better user experience within existing backend limitations. Not every ideal UX solution was technically possible, so the team had to find practical compromises. We focused on clearer visual hierarchy, better guidance through the steps, more understandable form patterns, and components that could support the insurance flow consistently. The interface had to help users understand what to do next, what information was required, and how far they were in the process.

Accessibility

Making accessibility part of the delivery

Accessibility was considered throughout the design and delivery process, not only as a final check before handoff.

I validate the design from an accessibility perspective, prepared accessibility guidelines for developers and provided consultations during implementation. This helped clarify how specific patterns should behave in practice.

As the implementation progressed, I also tested selected parts of the flow for accessibility to make sure the final experience stayed aligned with the intended design and accessibility requirements.

Building a reusable system beyond one product

As part of this project, I also worked on the design system for the online insurance experience, which is covered in more detail in a separate case study.

The system was shaped by the needs of the vehicle insurance flow, but it was not designed only for this one product. It had to support repeated patterns such as forms, inputs, selection cards, price summaries, validation states, helper texts, error messages, and navigation, while staying flexible enough to be reused across other insurance products in the future.

What changed

A guided flow for arranging car insurance online

The project resulted in a modernized online insurance flow that guides users through the process of arranging vehicle insurance more clearly.

For users, the experience became easier to follow and less dependent on insurance knowledge. For client, the redesign supported a more online-first perception of the brand and created a stronger foundation for presenting and selling insurance products digitally.

This project reminded me that insurance experience does not need to hide complexity completely, but guides users through it in a way that feels understandable, trustworthy, and manageable.

This project reminded me that a good design system is not the most complex one. It is the one people can actually use, trust, and maintain over time.
